Waterfront Rules and Regulations

Date Published: 1/1/1900 12:00:00 AM Author: Recreation Department

1. Waterfronts in Braintree will operate as follows: Sunset Lake from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Smith Beach will operate 7 hours daily depending on the tides. See the posted schedule at the beach weekly to learn when the lifeguard will be on duty. Swimming at either waterfront when the lifeguards are not on duty is not permitted.

2. No diving off the shallow side docks. No running on any float docks. No pushing on the docks. No jumping off the walls.

3. Babies cannot be brought into the water with diapers on. All persons in the water must be appropriately dressed for swimming. No street clothes will be acceptable. Appropriate swimming attire only.

4. Failure to respond to waterfront personnel’s directives will result in removal from the premises.

5. No glass containers of any type may be brought to the beach or lake by anyone at any time.

6. Bicycles must be kept off the beach areas. They must be kept where the lifeguards request.

7. No motorized craft (excluding electric trolling motors) will be permitted into the lake during the waterfront season..

8. No swimming beyond the float lines or be subjected to dismissal from the premises for the rest of the season.

9. Fishing at Sunset Lake (the state D.E.M. stocked the lake this year with over 500 brown and rainbow trout) is permitted only off the deep side wall beyond the sail boat piers (no fishing off these piers as well during classes) or from a boat in the lake beyond the swim lines only. Fishing at Smith Beach only in area beyond the west end jetty (when the blues are running—great catches at this spot late summer).

10. Vehicles are to park in marked areas only. Any violators will be towed at owners expense.

11. Use of masks and fins and other scuba gear is at the discretion of the lifeguards and never will it be allowed before
noon in the swimming areas.

12. Depositing of all litter into the proper barrels is mandatory of all visitors. Bringing alcoholic beverages or any controlled substance to Sunset Lake, Smith Beach or in any public area of town will subject those in possession to arrest and conviction.

13. Use of personal flotation devices on beginner bathers isn’t permitted. If a person can swim, they don’t need one, but if they can’t swim, such devices can only get a person into trouble using one. Any user of a boat in the lake must have a PFD worn during the bathing season and the waterfront personnel will strictly enforce this requirement.

14. Sunset Lake will be monitored by gate attendants, who will check to ensure Braintree residents ONLY are gaining access to the waterfront. Residents must accompany non-residents into Sunset Lake. Please have identification ready as you enter the gate to show to the gate attendants. Current vehicle trash stickers are acceptable or licenses.
